Sony DSR 11 DV cam deck to Macbook Pro-Am I screwed?
Dear Cows: I recently bought this deck and when I hooked it up to my old G4 laptop with AVID DV Pro, it worked like a dream. It autofigured to it perfectly as a “generic deck”.
Now my macbook is dying, I think (striped screen…desktop won’t appear) so I bought a new macbook pro laptop 17″ and the new Media Composer software. The DSR only has a FW400 cable and my new macbook doesn’t have FW 400 inputs. I bought a 400/800 converter plug (looks like a flashdrive with a 400 port on 1 end and 800 on the other, but it would not control the deck.
The deck has a FW 400 cable that plugs into the computer, but the other end that plugs into the deck is a round plug, not FW so I can’t just use a 400/800 cable.
Would any of those devices that go in the express card 34 slot to add ports work when you need to control a deck?
Sorry to ask such a basic question but I couldn’t find an answer in the archived posts.

You need to buy a Firewire 800 to mini 4-pin Firewire 400 cable. The Apple stores sell them, but you can get one cheaper at any of the internet sites that sell computer cables. I had the same problem when I needed to use my DSR-11 with a new Nehalem Intel Mac Pro.

I have the cable but the Macbook pro wants me to bring in video on OHCI/1394. I’ve looked thru the book and on the forum and can’t seem to find out how to get that option. No options appear in the capture tool in the video or audio windows and in deck configuration I tried both direct on no port and firewire no port. Everything lists ‘no port”.
I am not using mojo/dna devices.
The avid also makes a very unpleasant loud clicking sound when I’m trying to figure this out!

Not that this alone will help solve your whole problem, but don’t “auto configure” the deck. Select the DSR-11 template yourself. You should first always choose the provided template for a deck, if there is one.

So in the end, will the DSR 11 work with the Macbook Pro? I need to get one to use with Media Composer at home. Lou

Can anyone help me figure out what I am not doing to get deck control?
I’ve tried getting a new cable for the deck with an 800 on the other end
I’ve tried a Sonnos coupling converter, and a PCI card with FW 400
ports. I tried running through another drive. Nothing seems to work.When I go into capture mode using these devices, I start getting a
loud clicking sound—feedback of some sort. I got an error message
when I tried the PCI card: “Switch to 1394 mode before configuring
an OHCI device.” But I see no way to switch. In reading threads on
AVID and Creative Cow, I’ve found things going back to 2005 that
mention this, but nothing for the new MacBook and that seems to be related to people using Mojo/DNA which I don’t have. I’m only working with SD mini DV and from what I keep reading I should be able to plug directly into the computer.I feel like it must be some sort of setting in the AVID but I’ve tried everything I can think of…deck configurations, etc.
Can anyone help me???

I would have selected that template but this deck is not listed in the Sony array of decks. I tried others with a number close to it but no….
On my G4 it automatically recognizes it and loads on the FW400 port as a Generic NTSC device.
If I try to autoconfigure I get an error message: no ports were found for external devices.
I also am trying to load from a video camera to see if that will help troubleshoot; no luck with that either.
