Let me just start out by saying that I know the Cow is a serious forum for serious people. Having said that…

I’ve got some footage that was shot with a little Sony DCR-SR80. I know this camcorder to be SD at 29.97, and the clips are saved as .mpg files on the camera (mpeg2).

I imported these clips into FCP, but there’s no audio associated with the clips. I backed out and just tried using QT player for the clips, but again, no audio. I figure I’m missing a plugin somewhere, because if I play the clips on my XP laptop, they have audio.

There’s also something else going on with these clips on my Mac. The video looks really weird. It looks like the jaggie effect that happens to every 2 out of 5 frames with a 3:2 pulldown added, only it’s not just every 2 out of 5…it’s a ton of them. I realize this isn’t exactly a high-dollar camera, but when I play the clips on my XP machine, I don’t see all this weirdness…AND there’s audio.

Could this be a simple case of the Mac being so much better than the laptop that the laptop isn’t capable of showing all of these video artifacts? (If so, so be it…but what about the missing audio?)

    Thanks, one and all.

    Paul,

What are your audio settings on your mac? After importing into FCP and playing, do the audio meters bounce or are they dead? Same question about audio meter in quicktime. It might be as simple as checking your audio settings in FCP. If Audio is present, make sure it’s routed to either the default/local speaker or to the speakers you’ve got set up externally. If it is something happening upon import of the video onto your mac, how exactly is it being transferred from the camera?

Hi, Josh. I did some poking around and dug up a thread on a similar problem someone was having with .mpg files. What was suggested was using MPEG Streamclip to convert the mpg files to mov files. I did that (and also deinterlaced the clips in Streamclip), and now everything seems a-ok.

The person gave an explanation what was happening and why this worked, which I’m going to need to read again. I was a bit anxious to see if his suggestion did the trick, but now I want to understand why. Thanks for the reply.

    No problem.

I don’t use MPEG formats much, but when I do, streamclip has been a good program. I also like one called handbrake, which I use more often. MPEG is an interesting animal for sure.

Glad you got it figure out.
