Hey guys, been working on this for a while now and can’t seem to get it to work. Here’s the background…

Been working on editing a doc. for about a year now, and it’s time for some archived footage. Brought out the Beta deck (UVW-1800) and hooked it up to our Sony HDV deck via s-video and audio through our Mackie board- then to the deck.

We have picture and audio, however the picture is very messed up with green noise everywhere. (https://s723.photobucket.com/albums/ww237/tpahern/?action=view&current=Picture2.png) I have tried connecting with other s-video cords and through components, as well as testing multiple tapes, but always get the same result. the deck has been in the shop twice and both times it was returned to us and we were told it is working properly. Is there something I am missing here or has anyone seen something like this before and could throw some advice our way? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Try composite, see what happens.

Are the tapes Betacam or Beta SP? I know that the 1800 will only record on Beta SP tapes and not on regular Betacam. I am not sure about playback of Betacam.

The picture doesn’t suggest (for my self) any connexions related problem.
For me looks like something wrong with the tape (Betacam no SP, as Ken suggest?) or the desk video-heads.

If the video looks like that on a video monitor connected to the video output of the Beta deck, it has the symptoms of low RF, either on the original recording or off the heads in the playback deck. Assume you’ve cleaned your Beta deck’s heads and transport before running “archival” tapes in it.
How old is the archival material and do you know what it was recorded on?

[Ken Jones] ” I am not sure about playback of Betacam.”

Yep, it plays regular oxide (non SP) tapes just fine. It requires the metal SP tapes in order to record.

First off, is the deck set up properly for DV mode and not HDV mode? If it’s in HDV mode, this won’t work since it’s getting an SD signal.

Much better to get a proper video card or external box such as the AJA Kona LHi and just bring the footage directly in to the system rather than take a big quality hit through the HDV deck.
