    Hi Guys

i hoppe you can help me.

i have a sonnet tempo EP4 port multiplier with two sonnet fusion 500 enclosures. i have 3 x 500 gig seagate barracuda 16m cash hard drives in each and would like to put an additional 2 drives in each enclosure. seagate have updated their drives to a slightly faster spec. if i insert these drive into the enclosures will it cause any problems or doesn’t it matter?

some one told me thet the firm ware on all the drives should be the same. i don’t know what to do as i don’t whant to spend money to find out it will not work.

hope someone out there has an answer for me. thanks in advance for your help.

    Nick

I think it does matter… should match them I’d think.

Can you consolidate? i.e. put all the same drives you have now in one of the enclosures… then add the new ones to the other…

    Nick,

Most, if not all manufacturers have ceased making the older 150mb/s drives, however, all the new 300mb/s drives are backward compatible. Stripe all the new drives together and all the old ones together, but don’t mix and match in the same stripe set. All of your drives will most likely run at 150mb/s even though the new ones may be capable of 300mb/s. Thats not really a huge issue. Eventually you can swap ot the old ones for 300mb/s drives and you’ll be able to benefit from the increased throughput.

I have a firmtek system and I seem to remember reading something about keeping them the same but I think that particularly applies to raided discs. Right now I have a pair of matched 300’s raided and 2 different drives that are jbod style and they work great. Their should be recomendations on the sonnet site.
