I have a Sonnet Tempo-x eSATA 8 card but FCP continually crashes when I hook up a WD external HD to my G5. Is there a known cure or update I can get? I’ve looked thru FAQs but can’t find anything that is compatible.

    Hi John
I have the same Sonnet e-Sata setup.
When I upgraded to Leopard I was concerned that my Sonnett may need upgrading too. They do have a firmware upgrade. Since doing so I need to power my raid before I power my G5. This circumvents any freezes.

I had the same problem with a WD drive, turns out that some WD models put themselves to sleep after a certain period of time, regardless of the energy Saver settings on the Mac causing FCP to crash. I have found no way to override the sleep settings so I no longer use the drive.

John, I had the same issue. Flash the firmware on your WD drives (this probably will have to be done on a PC system – so you likely will have to remove the drives to do this), and they will stop crashing.

Updating the firmware on a Mac was more than I could accomplish — don’t remember why exactly, but I handed the drives over to a PC guy and he flashed them in minutes, and I lost no data.

Obviously grab the most up to date updates Sonnet has, but that is the easy part.

    – good luck
