Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but…
i’ve been asked to add some background music; popular songs, hits, and pop music – of the era!
Does anyone know of a useful website where i can look up the top 10, say, for a specific date (going back almost a decade)

    But most importantly *with samples*
some of the Top10 sites i’ve looked at list weird songs that no ones ever heard of. And its taking me too long to track down the song, to listen to it, to see if it really was popular at the time…

    So any tips please.

The big challenge is finding songs with cleared copyrights for your use. The reason that you’re finding obscure songs is the popular ones are rarely available. For those you have to clear them one-by-one through ASCAP, BMI, etc.

Greenlight is a company that can obtain clearances for you.

    Thanks for the reply,
but i guess i didnt explain myself clearly.

I need a quick and easy list of popular songs, by date.

I just need to know what the popular songs on the TV/radio were, on a specific date.

(Sorting out the licensing can ONLY be done AFTER the songs have been choosen. not before.)

I don’t know if you can find out per date, but if you Google “billboard best songs of” you can get best songs per year. For instance, here’s an example of the 1980s. https://www.liketotally80s.com/billboard-number-one-hits.html
