    Hiya,

So I’ve been experiencing a host of weird bugs with AECS3, and here’s the one that’s really hurting my work flow: When I set a comp to render, sometimes After Effects won’t render the entire work area, but it will start at some random point further down the time line, and also end at a random point. It’s nothing to do with the actual work area bar at the top of the timeline, because I almost always have it covering the entire thing. I have to start a render and have capslock off the make sure I see the first frame being rendered, or else have to stop the render and start it up again, at which time it generally starts rendering correctly from the beginning. This does not guarantee that it won’t stop before the end of the timeline, however. This happens about 50% of the time now, and it’s really irritating. Any suggestions on how I can make this stop happening would be greatly appreciated.

also, are you rendering (via the render queue) or exporting (via file>export). that may make a difference too.

and just to make sure, you are not using quicktime 7.4.0… you are either using an earlier 7.3 version or a later version like 7.4.1 or 7.4.5, right? (7.4.0 broke a lot of things with media apps like ae).

    I’m on a Mac Pro running OS X v. 10.5.2.

I use the render queue, not File>Export.

I am using Quicktime 7.4.1. I know all about the headaches that 7.4 caused myself and many others.

i haven’t seen this before, but some times ae just goofs up…

typical things i’ll do when ae just seems to not be working correctly are:
    – from ae, try edit>purge>all, then try the render.
    – restart ae, then try again (i’m sure you’ve done this one)
    – from the memory & caches preference, clear all caches, then try the render.
    – reboot the machine, then try ae.
    – run disk utility (applications/utilities) and repair permissions. maybe verify the disk (repair if necessary), then try ae.
    – remove the ae prefs file (users/username/library/preferences/adobe/after effects/version#/adobe after effects (ver) prefs). you could try removing the whole folder with the version number (like ‘8.0’) too. then try ae.
    – to rule out bad codecs, remove all files from library/quicktime and users/usernamelibrary/quicktime (don’t throw them away, just put them in a folder on the desktop), then try ae.
    – try creating a new user account (apple>system preferences, then click accounts, click the ‘+’ at the bottom to add a user account, then try ae.
    – since you are on an intel mac, you could try opening ae (cs3) under rosetta (essentially run the powerpc version of ae). select the ae application and choose file>get info. check the box that says something like ‘run under rosetta’. then try ae.

if the last suggestion helps, i would contact adobe, because you don’t want to have to run cs3 under rosetta just to get ae to work properly…

it might be helpful to know more about your system… ram, ae’s memory & cache settings, is multiprocessing enabled (cs3) or using nucleo, any extra hardware, do you see this with any codec/file type or just one…. things like that.
