ok, so i made my first movie on after effects, its just a simple movement of a character using illustator layers. This movement looks fine in the preview but after i made the movie it looks slow and rough, it has lost the smoothness of the preview. It was in full resolution and set it in the best settings, but the movement has slowed down considerably. Im sure it must be something straightforward, but ive know idea what. any ideas guys?

Check the size of the file. By rendering at best settings with no compression, it will mahe a HUGE file that will choke most computers trying to play it back. Once you have your piece like you want, render it to a more compressed format like Mpeg4, or Divx or something. In the render settings it lists all the codecs that are available on your system. Experiment with some of them to see what gives you the best quality vs. file size.

It’s actually often preferable to render Lossless from After Effects and then compress the file in a dedicated program like Compressor or Squeeze.

Also, little known fact, DivX is ancient greek for EVIL! =)

I only used Divx as an example off the top of my head, not as an endorsement. I’ll admit that I rarely use AE to do my compression. It’s usually a lossless render that I then use in Premiere.

Crazybones, now that you have the BIG render file, you can compress it into a .wmv (if you’re on a windows machine) by using Windows Media Encoder which is a free download from Microsoft.

I’m sure I’ll get even more grief from wuzelwazel for mentioning Divx, and now .wmv – ah well – it’s free and easy for beginners.
