some wicked masking?
Posted by Malcolm Desoto on July 12, 2007 at 5:46 pmHow do you suppose they did this? Masking by hand? Some kind of simulator? It just looks amazing.I’f I were to do it, I think I would probably take photos of different oils on a black bachground; or better yet, film them. I dunno though.
Thoughts?

July 12, 2007 at 6:06 pmMy guess would be just film splattering ink and overlay it with various transfer modes. It could be done a number of ways but that would be the easiest.

July 12, 2007 at 6:46 pmVideotape ink squirting into a liquid – water most likely. I’ve done this before using ink and a glass of water. The trick is to get the water to not shake too much, which if you play that video back you’ll see about 1/3 of the way through the water sways back and forth a little. Then overlay the clips with different transfer modes. Something better than a glass would be a fish tank so you’d not have rounded sides and highlights to deal with.

July 12, 2007 at 6:56 pmI am not convinced any of this started as analog material.
I do recognize a few Cycore effects here.

July 12, 2007 at 7:12 pmI agree, there is some effects applied that mirror and rotate it to enhance the effect, but I don’t think it was computed generated.

July 13, 2007 at 2:56 amI can’t speak for this particular project, but over the years MK12 has been known to do a lot of ink in water. That’s not a guess. I’ve emailed them about it.
Again, I can’t speak for this particular project, but they are pretty skilled with mixing real world organics with digital.
