Some questions about rendering both timeline and export
I’m editing in CC with an i7 CPU, GTX 570 GPU, Windows 7. My elements are usually native AVCHD, ProRes HQ, or Avid DNxHD (Quicktime format). Drives are internal RAID 0, external RAID 5 (eSata).
My timelines have some AE elements, plus some Red Giant effects, so I’m getting used to seeing red lines.
While waiting for things to render, I’ve used some GPU monitoring software just see what’s going on under the hood. What I saw surprised me. According to the GPU-Z my GPU is not really breaking a sweat while rendering timelines. Average GPU “load” is typically under 40% sometimes much lower.
I’ve been thinking about upgrading my video card, but if I’m not maxing out the one I’ve already got, what’s the point? Would it matter any if I switched my ProRes and Avid material to another format than Quicktime?
Finally on export renders in AME, which are typically either to H.264 or ProRes (via Miraizon). The GPU isn’t doing much here, which is not surprising. But the CPU frequently is also just poking along at 50-65% utilization. So again I’m wondering why the relatively low numbers?
I’ve not done any really rigorous testing here, these are mostly general impressions. But I’m wondering what the major variables, aside from CPU/GPU, that influence render times in CC?
