  • Some parts of the video tracks are not rendering

    Hello,

I’m not new to Sony Vegas, I’ve been using the Platinum 8.0 version since last summer. I’ve never had a problem with video rendering before.

Yesterday, however, I tried to edit and rerender an old project file; I was improving it from its former quality. When I saved the file in March, there was no problem.

Now, when I’m saving it, most of the video saves properly, but there are random places where the video just appears black when I render it. The effects appear, but the clips don’t. The video looks fine in the preview screen, but some areas of it just don’t render. It’s not any specific video track or from any specific file, and none of the files seem to be corrupted. I’ve tried saving it in multiple video formats, such as .avi and .wmv.

It’s the same sections that don’t save each time, but these sections saved fine when I saved the file in March. Resaving the project and using the backup file doesn’t make any difference.

Can someone please tell me how to fix this problem? I would greatly appreciate it!

Maybe you are missing a required codec for certian events in yout timeline or perhaps some of your video clips are offline.

How would I figure out what codec I’m missing? The files aren’t offline, I’ve checked that.

Rachel, if you still have the original tape(s), try re-capturing the problem segments.
Right-click on the clip(s) in Project Media and select “Recapture”.

The videos aren’t from a camera, they are .avi files stored on my computer from DVDs.

The random parts of the video still won’t render, and I’m getting worried it might be some sort of virus because I’ve never had this problem before.

“The videos aren’t from a camera, they are .avi files stored on my computer from DVDs.”

What program was used to do the conversion?
What type of AVIs are they?
If you don’t know, please run GSpot and report the result.
I had a student come to me with a video that he claimed was an AVI but Vegas refused to open it. I ran GSpot and it turned out to be an XVid which Vegas will not work with.

If you’re concerned about a potential virus, run Housecall.
It’s an online virus scanner from Trend Micro.
They make PC-Cillin, the anti virus software I use, so I know they can be trusted.

They are .avi files; although most of them are XVid compression. The newer ones are compressed with the Lagarith Lossless Codec, but those ones aren’t giving me problems. But they all load into Vegas and appear on the timeline and in the preview box just fine.

The weird thing is that I’ve rendered clips from these .avi files many, many times with Vegas in the past. The stranger part is that I put various clips from the same file on the timeline, and some are rendering and others aren’t; that’s what makes me think it isn’t a file type issue. I saved this same video a few weeks ago and all of the clips rendered fine. I’m just resaving it with some better quality clips, but it isn’t even the newer clips that are a problem, it’s a few of the older ones.

What I’m trying to figure out here is why it worked before but isn’t working now.

[Rachel Rosen] “It’s the same sections that don’t save each time”

That would suggest that your clip is corrupted in that
area. Let’s do a test. Open a new fresh project.
Drop one of the clips you are having problems with on
the timeline and render it. If the entire clip renders
without a problem, your clip is fine. If on the other hand it
blacks out then you have some clip corruption and need to
    re-capture the affected clips.

Another thing you might try with your problemed project
is to remove all the new clips you added to see if they are affecting some of your old clips. Even though your new clips are playing does not mean that they are not causing a problem. After all, your project rendered fine until you added these new (better quality) clips.

Well, I tried that; they render fine in another project file. I guess this means I’ll have to replace all of the clips that black out; I was hoping to avoid this because it will be quite time consuming but I guess there is no other way to fix the problem.

What about copying & pasting the entire project itnto a new Vegas document? Maybe that will take care of the problem. It’s worked for me in the past.

    Thanks
