Activity Forums DaVinci Resolve Some Observations

Overall I’m really enjoying Resolve. We’re primarily a telecine house, although we’ve dabbled in using Color to support some of our clients switching to video/Red shoots. Some observations so far:

Scratchpad memories: there appears to be no way to really use these without the DaVinci control surface. There are no keyboard keys mapped to them (that I can find), and nothing in the Wave panel mappings. Coming from a 2K, these are well-used by our colorists (at least the first 6/8). I see that you can take a still, then drag the still to a memory, then right-click to get a menu you can pick “Add Correction” from but that makes using the memories for quick comparisons cumbersome, as well as having to manage a lot of unnecessary stills.

Storage names: The storages on our Terrablock are creatively named things like “FCP_Media” and “FCP_Media2.” I also have “Media” and “Media Backup 1.” Creative! But if I add “Media” as a storage, it won’t let me add any other storage that begins with “Media,” like “Media Backup 1.” I get an error “a higher level directory already exists in the list” but these are completely different drives. Same thing with “FCP_Media” and “FCP_Media2.”

Wave mappings: the mappings on the Wave seem a little rough. I like the unified menu “up/down” levels, unlike Color’s split knob/button menus. I see no use of the Alt button though, and no mouse/cursor emulator (a toggle to make one of the joyballs like the fourth ball on the DaVinci surface) even though there’s a button on the Wave to turn on/off the video cursor. Overall the Wave seems a bit underutilized.

Autopop: I see some autopopping going on, like if you go to the Window menu on the Wave and hit one of the window types the window tab will pop up, but if you just hit “matte/mask/off” to turn the already selected circular window on there is no autopop. I’d like to see more extensive autopopping, ie whenever you alter a setting with the panel make sure that the tab with that settings pops up (“page flip” on the 2K). Maybe it’s even possible to do some “reverse” autopopping by making the Power Window menu show up on the Wave when you select the window tab on the UI.

Linear window: Aspect seems to be disabled for this type of window, and I can’t see a way to alter the height or width without clicking and dragging the outlines in the window. Here would be a great place to start using the Alt functions: alt-Pan for x-size and alt-Tilt for y-size perhaps.

Let me also add another plea to consider adding support for legacy DUI/NUI panels. A $30k panel is not in the cards for us right now, but I could probably persuade the money-people to buy a $500 set of Resolve key caps for one of the sets of DUI panels that sit around here.

We’re on a 2008 Mac Pro with 8GB RAM, GTX285 and GT120. I’m more than happy with the performance for now, especially relative to Color. I’m hoping Apple accelerates the Mac Pro update cycle before upgrading again.

Getting memories supported with a normal keyboard/wave setup is on top of my personal to do list right now. It seems silly to leave that out.

Hi, many good points here. Let me first say the Wave implementation is only our first step and given a little time we will update the functionality. Memories are on that list. Regarding the Storage config labels – we see the operation you report and will improve that in the next release.
There is a definitive engineering reason why the legacy DaVinci 2K panels do not operate on the Mac Resolve and so I would not expect that situation to be changed any time soon. All I can advise is to save a little from each job and spring for the DaVinci Resolve Control Surface. It will really make your day and impress your clients too.

Any movement on Euphonix support? I know for example smoke and storm and redcinex are all supporting that panel. Would be nice to have them all happy on one machine without needing 2 panels!
