right now my system is set up with external hardrives….400 and 800 firewires running and plugged in everywhere,,,
after a series of problems (and i thank all that helped)…we are thinking heavily on going to a raid system…
but what;s the difference between x serve -raid and the x raid g-5…

    also…here’s another little doozy…
what’s the big difference between uncompressed 8 bit and 10 bit..and how do i know which one i’m using

    X-Raid is hard drives.
    X-Serve is a server (processor).

You just need the XRaid as storage most likely.

10 or 8-bit describes the quality of image sampling. You should know which one you are using based on capture or sequence settings.

You should also think about RAIDs from different manufacturers such as Huge or Medea. Look into getting fibre channel as it’s fast and reliable and also scalable for future SAN applications. These types of manufacturers will get you more performance for less money than an Xserve. I personally have experience with Huge and their customer service is fantastic and their products work great.

    Medea:

I hope you’re not using either 8 or 10 bit uncompressed with a fw400 drive. FW800 maybe, but doesn’t the firewire bus scale back to 400 if you have anything fw400 plugged in? So you might be trying to do uncompressed on drives that are negligible for DV. The FW400 really is fine for DV, but internal ATAs are so much faster.

Like they said, you’ll need external raid or external SATA raid to do uncompressed.

Most people who post here asking about RAID do not really know what they want or if they need a RAID system. It just sounds cool.

You need RAID in FCP only for two reasons:
    1. Backup data security (subset hot swappable array towers)
    2. IMproved throughput for high bandwidth media

If you your need is #2, you should be consulting with whoever makes your proprietary card or input system.
If you need data security, talk to some data security people. If you need hot swappable arrays so you can move projects form one suite to another, you need to spend a few hours googling the topic.

    thanks guys…

let me just add that i actually have a good background in editing…but the more i google and try to learn about the best way to set up my system the more i go crazy trying to figure it out…

    for example i never even gave 8-bit or 10-bit a thought…
but on further review it seems my settings are on 8 bit -yuv…

the reason i was asking about raids ?
i’ve been getting a lot of glitches and stalls while viewing in my timeline…i tried everything…the only thing that i can come up with is that my fw-800’s are having some sort of transfer problem or stalling to catch up…thus freezing my playbacks…

i just want to get my system up to par so i can get to the next level…

right now i’m only shooting dv…(panasonic dvx-100a using a dsr-11 to dump in the video)
i’m actually fine with that…however after to reading all these questions and answers…i’m getting the feeling i’m doing things wrong…and i’d like to fix that.

    thanks for the help

Arty, if you think you might like to go to an Xserve RAID, I have a 5.6 TB Xserve RAID, virtually unused, that I’ve been trying to sell. Contact me at marshallmediagroup@comcast.net if interested.
