  • some audio normalization advice?

I know STP, but I am not good enough with it to work with 16 20 minute talking head video clips to hit my deadline. I was given these video clips and the audio was recorded at about -30 to -24db. I usually add the compressor effect in FCP just to dial everything in a bit. I want to get this audio up to about -6db peak for DVD authoring. Can someone walk me through an effect or set of effects to get my audio levels up. If I just push them up in the time line I barely get to -12db.

This was done on a lapel mic and I don’t hear a lot of room noise or hum, so can you help with with normalization after I apply compression? Is normalization the way to go here?

    Thanks

Download and try Levelator, it’s free all over the Web. You just drag and drop an audio file on top and check the result when it’s done, which happens quite quickly.

Thanks David. This thing works well. I have to pull back my audio level about 2db because I am hitting the red in a few areas, but this did the trick.

    Appreciate the help.

Adjusting levels on tracks in the timeline only gives you +12dB of gain, whereas adding a gain filter allows you to add much more. Add a gain filter before the compressor filter in the effects chain and boost to taste. Also be aware that adjusting gain in the timeline is post-filter, so if you set a limiter threshold to -6 and then boost the levels in the timeline, you’ll go over -6.

I dislike the audio filters in FCP. Much of the time there is no realtime feedback in payback while adjusting parameters.
