I found a solution to my problem (https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/992759) of the way FCP breaks up the capture from a JVC HD100, placing random gaps in your coverage: move to Premiere Pro.

It’s not a solution I wanted to use — I bought a $4,000 MacBook Pro, including FCP Studio, a couple of years ago specifically to do video editing. But Apple doesn’t seem to have any desire to fix this issue, so they have forced me to the competition.

Capture worked perfectly on my PP PC — no dropped frames, no sudden breaks and anywhere from 3-7 seconds of lost footage. It just works (hey, isn’t that what they say about Macs?)

I’ve become a Mac guy over the years, but on this front, Mac has abandoned me — and all owners of the HD100/200, IMO. It’s a shame.

I keep hearing about this (I have an HD100) and I’m just not
having this problem. I don’t know if its an intel issue or what.
    (I’m running G5’s here)

We ALWAYS shoot for the first 2 minutes of tape with bars or a lens cap on (that first section of the tape is vulnerable) then we pre-roll for 10 seconds before action and post roll for 10 seconds after action.

Sure there will be clip breaks every time the recording button is stopped. But In this way I work its not a problem. I’m definitely not getting randomly broken up clips during takes if thats whats happening.

There’s no way I’m using Premiere again, even on systems its custom built for it has way more stability issues than final cut pro.

    Hi Chris,

I don’t see how it could be an Intel issue, but something isn’t right. It’s not just on stop/start, which I would of course expect. It’s utterly random in how it happens — it can be right in the middle of an interview or take. No rhyme or reason at all. It’s not a preroll or postroll problem — it just decides, during the capture, to break a clip and start a new clip, leaving the accursed gaps.

I, too, would much prefer to use FCP. That’s what’s so frustrating. On the JVC section of the DVinfo board, there’s much discussion of this issue.

I have not used that camera, but I do know there was a firmware update that was needed and you should really update to the latest FCS.

ALso, there’s premier for Mac now too so you can still use your MBP.

the only differences I saw so far were that folks with the issue were on mac/intel, but that may not be entirely true anymore.

I’m sure glad I don’t have that problem.

I didn’t see this idea offered on your other threads.

Under User Preferences, in the General tab, there is an option on the right side “On Timecode Break”. Have you tried setting this to “Warn After Capture” as well as turn off the “Create new clip on Start/Stop” option?

    Mike,

Yeah, I’ve made those changes. Again, it’s not a start/stop taping issue. It happens anywhere in a clip. It’s almost like FCP senses a stop/start and makes a new clip, but the camera hasn’t stopped or started; it’s been rolling tape the whole time.
