Solution for a Disaster anyone??
Posted by David Mosquera keith on January 7, 2009 at 10:24 amHi everyone, the worst thing that could happen has happened…my 1TB disk has died..with many gigabytes of source files i was using on a project….ive tried to rescue the files with many data rescue aplications but its imposible and im not willing to pay 2000 3000 euros to have it profesionaly recovered…
The question is: when i recapture the missing files wich is the best way to reconect the newly captured files back to the project?(without reediting)i mean that when i recapture the files there not going to have the same duration and therefor if i reconect those files the edit is going to be unmatched and a mess..is there a way of reconecting this newly captured material and maybe scrubbing it somehow to place???any ideas are welcomed
greetings David Mosquera.

January 7, 2009 at 11:41 amHave you tried freezing the drive? Believe it or not, sometimes that works. Saved a drive for me last month, actually. I made sure to seal it in plastic before I froze it though. Be sure you have a spare drive to copy everything to as soon as you plug it back in because at best it’s a temporary fix.

January 7, 2009 at 12:27 pmThanks for answering john, the problem with my drive is that it is a La Cie 2 500gb drive on Raid, both drives work, they just dont mount… and when i extract data from them its corrupt…now im recapturing the material and looking for a easy way to reconect the files and adjust them back to place somehow,i would re edit again if it wasnt like 6-7 hours of edited sequences that will be lost Ouch! just crossing my fingers for a Guru to come by and save my ass :S
Thank you anyways john reagards David Mosquera

You simply batch capture from the original project.
Open the project.
Open Log and Capture
Select Batch.
This will re-capture all the media in your browser and everything will reconnect automatically.

January 7, 2009 at 1:48 pmHey Walter thanks for taking the time to answer,i cant batch capture because the footage that was lost was HI8 VHC and super8 footage thats been captured somewhere else ( i dont have the hardware to capture this..)and…how does the batch capture reconect the footage exactly to its place if the video file isnt going to have the exact same duration?..or is it? meaning: the second time the file is captured it isnt going to have the same amount of black at the begining or end..and therefor wont match the first edit..hope im explaining myself, Thanks again

Nope, it won’t. You don’t have timecode so there’s no way to reconnect anything properly in your case. You’ll have to manually rebuild everything.
In this case you should definitely have a backup drive in place so once you capture everything, you can copy it all off to the second drive in case of another failure.

January 7, 2009 at 3:29 pmThis is why many of us run RAID 5 arrays these days. They’re much cheaper now and the media is protected even if we lose a drive in the array.

January 7, 2009 at 3:53 pmAssuming this is a Lacie 2-Big Drive. As you discovered they are not reliable, but the problem may not be in the drives themselves.
LaCie’s power supply for this unit is probably what caused the initial failure. The freezing idea is good, but won’t fix the Power Supply.
Suggest getting LaCie into this issue and have them either install a new PS or ship you same. Transfer your media to a RAID 5 of some sort and throw the 2-Big away. Don’t ask how I know this. -

January 7, 2009 at 6:16 pmhow do you know the drives work? If they are spinning up and not mounting, the problem could be in your raid controller. Is it possible to pull the drive and plug it directly into the computer?

January 8, 2009 at 10:42 amHey dennis sorry for not answering i actually didnt see your post!, i think the raid controller is in the Lacie box and ive tried 2 boxes exactly the same in 3 diferent computers i even tried to mount the drives separately but when the data was extracted it was corrupt..ive tried many data recovery aps but the only one that actually lets me see the actual directorys i need is data rescue II but as i said the files when recovered are corrupt 🙁
