  • Solid, reliable config for Kona 2 / FCP?

    Hi there,

I have a system heading overseas for a month to cature some HD out of a camera for bluescreen work. It’s a Dual 2.3G G5 with 2.5G ram and some big fast disks and a Kona 2 card. The hardware is all nice and shiny, but I’m concerned about the system’s stability under both 10.4.1 and FCP 5 . I’m not so concerned about features; just seeing it work without too much crashing.

So; is there a generally accepted ‘solid’ configuration of versions for FCP, Quicktime, OSX and the Kona Drivers that will yield good, reliable results in capture and playback? I hate the thought of late night calls from South Africa and trying to debug things on the phone…

Thanks to you all; this looks like an excellent forum!

So far 10.4.1 is not the way to go.

We are using 10.3.9 (some folks feel 10.3.8 is best), QuickTime 7.0.1, FCP 5 and the current KONA drivers is very workable.

A very solid config is FCP 4.5 with OS 10.3.8. Been running that since 10.3.8 came out and it’s completely solid. However, we have now learned that FCP 4.5 is not frame accurate enough to edit correctly to HDCAM consistently everytime so we just upgraded to FCP 5.0 / 10.4.1 with the latest Kona 2 drivers.

Four hours of testing last night so far showed that everything was very snappy and responsive and the Fibre Channel drives are really cooking. Graphics look a lot better in the DVCPro HD codec and the overall processing of DVCPro HD looks better in FCP 5. We’re about to cut 6 HD episodes of a broadcast show over the next two weeks with 2 systems running FCP 5/ 10.4.1 so I’ll let you know how it goes.

[olivier jean] “any new on the automatic duck fix with Tiger?”

Actually I did hear back from Wes yesterday and he’s not able to reproduce what happened here. He is able to make the conversion perfectly whether he uses Tiger or Panther. So I need to investigate more here and see if I can make the conversion correctly with another Tiger machine.

    Hi Walter,

How is the new setup running. We have a KONA, FCP5, OSX10.4.1, etc and are very anxious to hear the results of all YOUR upgrades.

    Thanks,
