Solid color for lower Third CMYK, Pantone, RGB
Posted by Thomas Roberts on August 7, 2015 at 8:23 pmI’ve created a solid and used event pan/crop to make a lower third. Client sent me over CMYK, Pantone and RGB values for “their colors”
Where do add these values in Sony Vegas Pro 13. RGB numbers would be huge….
Thanks!

Now, let the fun begin!

You must convert your RGB numbers to the Open FX color values that Vegas Pro supports. OFX color values must be between 0.0 and 1.0. You can do this by using a percentage calculation. Let say that your clients numbers are R:255 G:136 B:0. You would divide each number by RGB 255 to convert to OFX values. So 255 / 255 = 1.0, and 136 / 255 = 0.53 and 0 / 255 is 0. That means you should put 1.0, 0.53, 0.0 into Vegas Pro to get your clients colors.

Here are my results.
Aaron, I sourced a Pantone <> RGB <> CMYK Sampler from the NET and selected their PMS105. It’s one of those “nondescript”, and therefore challenging, brown tones:
So, here are the original RGB numbers from that Pantone and the conversions for OFX colour values for Vegas:
R = 130: 130/255 = 0.5098039215686275
G = 117: 117/255 = 0.4588235294117647
B = 15: 15/255 = 0.0588235294117647
Have screen-grabbed their chart; imported to Vegas Pro13 and I apply my Colour Picker method, picking from my ExtMon as source, I get these values generated within GenMed Solid Colour:
You can observe the difference is that Vegas Pro has mathematically rounding-up using the 0.001 position
R: 0.5098039215686275 => 0.51
G: 0.4588235294117647 => 0.46
B: 0.0588235294117647 => 0.06
I’m guessing, and maybe John Rofrano could shed some light, that the “code” is making use of that part of the code to round-up the RGB OFX numbers.
Discuss.
Cheers

Vegas Pro only uses two decimal places so if you have a number with more decimal places it will use standard rounding rules.
In my example, 136 / 255 = 0.53333333333333. When you round, any number 5 or higher rounds up while any number below 5 rounds down. For 0.533 the 0.003 is less than 0.005 so you round down and the 2 decimal value remains 0.53.
In each of your cases:
R: 0.5098039215686275 => 0.51
G: 0.4588235294117647 => 0.46
B: 0.0588235294117647 => 0.06
all of the 3rd decimal numbers were greater than 5 so:
0.509 the 9 is 5 or greater and becomes 0.51
0.458 the 8 is 5 or greater and becomes 0.46
0.058 the 8 is 5 or greater and becomes 0.06
These are just basic math rounding rules of adding +1 to the digit on the left if the digit on the right is 5 or greater. Vegas Pro does this for greater accuracy.

August 9, 2015 at 2:43 pmThanks for confirming John that that is the way that Vegas rounds the second decimal place. Do you have any comment on the accuracy of my workflow and the consequent value it may give the user?
