Software update breaks Audio playback in Final Cut 7
I was having a problem with audio playback in Final Cut 7. I preformed all of the ordinary software repair solutions to no avail. I finally went all out and wiped the drive and started over from scratch. After the fresh install of the OS and Final Cut Studio everything worked fine. I tested playback on multiple projects. I then installed Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5. No problems with playback after that install. Then I updated all of my system software to the most current version. Playback issues resumed. I am stumped as to what is causing it.
I have one of the earlier models of the Mac Pro. What happens with the audio is that it will play back the left channel then if you pause it will play back the right channel. If you have multiple track of audio it will switch between one and the other when you pause.
I am running Snow Leopard.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I won’t go past 10.6.7 in SL. The 10.6.8 update was nothing to do with FCS3 suite and caused issues for some people with graphics drivers. FCP sound be updated to 7.0.3 version.
How are you monitoring the audio? If you are going via an external card like Kona, Decklink, Matrox etc then are those drivers up to date?

I’m monitoring the audio over headphones. No external card required. I’d really like to find out which update broke my machine.

Just took a look. I am running FCP 7.0.3 and just plain old 10.6. The only update my Mac shows is for 10.6.8 V1.1, Air Port and iphone SDK. I don’t know how I can update to just 10.6.7.

Sure you can. Go over to Apple’s support site and type in “10.6.7 combo update” in the search box and you’ll find it. The combo updates contain all the previous ones as well so you don’t have to do them all incrementally.

Running two systems (Both Mac Pro 8-cores) at 10.6.8 with FCP 7.0.3 and Kona 3 with the 10.1 driver and no issues at all. Machine is up 12-15 hours a day. Also have a Macbook Pro (late 2011 model) with 10.7.3 and FCP 7.0.3 running. This system gets pushed hard on location and no problems. All systems have the Master Collection CS5.5.

I would do the OS install and update before reloading any software but try to update to 10.6.7 and see if that helps. As it is internal audio, I suspect it is a combo of software and OS version. Also don’t forget to repair permissions after installing any software.

Almost any time you update anything you have to uninstall and reinstall the Kona drivers, no matter how recently you’ve done it. Its takes all of about 1-min. to do.
That’s probably got a 99.9% probability of curing the issue. So, where should I send my invoice? 🙂

So I did the Combo update and repaired disk permissions and the problem came back. All I did was install the 10.6.7 combo update.
I am at my wits end with this. I have never had a problem like this.

So just did a little test. If I open the project this error started with all subsequent projects will have the audio problem. If I close final cut and open another project no problem with the audio.
Solution. Delete problem project.
