Hi! I’ve just replaced my old Tandberg LTO6 drive with a IBM Ultrium HH6. I was quite happy with LTFS Manager 3.3.0 for backup purposes, but obviously the software (being HPE) says the IBM HH6 is unsupported. Is there another free application I could use for this? I mainly do the backups that the Argentine Institute of Cinematography requires for each new movie, LTO6 is what they ask for, and that´s what i give them. IBM’s own app is command-line, but I’m not really a command-line kind of man, so I’m trying to get rid of the aggravation… Any pointers will be greatly appreciated. Best to all!
To write LTFS, free software or command line software is not generally a reliable way to make backups. There is little or no verification, and the way data gets written, often takes longer, and is sometimes laborious to restore back from tape when it needs to be restored.
There are many paid softwares with different levels of features and complexity that enable reliable and easy writing to LTO LTFS. Most also have a trial version so you can try before committing.
From my experience, I would recommend Canister from Hedge. It costs $299 and is perpetual. After the first year, additional years are optional and $99 per year. There is also myLTO at the same price, and Yoyotta ID LTFS ($497), Archiware and others at higher price, and more features than Canister.
