  • Soft Video when Burning DVDs

Posting here because I use Sony Vegas 6.0. I don’t believe I’m the only one who’s noticed this but many times I feel that my sharp-looking video gets softened a bit when burned to MPEG-2 DVD. Here’s the deal, I now shoot in HDV but output to DV.
I use Nero for DVD creation and for the most part everything looks good.

But I can’t help but notice a slight “softness” to the image after I check the disc before release. It’s as if I used some Tiffen diffusion Pro-mist ( which I haven’t been using ). It’s not bad but when I’ve looked at my recent projects shot on HDV compared with my older DVCAM stuff… I have to say that the DVCAM DVD’s look well… a bit better as far as apparent “sharpness” is concerned.

I know HDV does a good job and it almost reminds me of the CP-16 using color reversal tungsten newsfilm ( which I shot back in the “dark ages” ). But I can’t help but think something is softening it a bit in the MPEG2 transcoding process. I know I’ll migrate to releasing my projects in Blu-Ray eventually, but for the foreseeable future it’s standard DVD.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.

Low bitrate and downconvert to SD DVD are likely the culprits. What bitrate are you encoding to?

Thanks for responding. I am using the OEM SW of Nero Essentials that came with my Sony DVD drive. It doesn’t allow much in the way of “configuring” as the settings are somewhat automatic and limited.

But here’s what I’m able to read from the “set-up” menu.

    Quality Setting : Standard Play
Sample Format: Automatic (there is progressive, interlaced settings

Bit Rate: 5073 kbit/s ( this button is muted )
Encoding Mode: Fast 1 pass Encoding & High Quality 2-pass VBR

I can’t find anymore specifics on this as I’m assuming this is an entry-level DVD burning software.

Probably might do well to get a beefier DVD SW with more varibles but I was looking for simplicity which has done okay but I do notice some subtleties in detail loss.

    Thanks again,
