So what”s the correct install procedure for all the new stuff?
Posted by Chris Poisson on May 21, 2005 at 2:27 pmI’ve got a 2 gig dual G5 running Decklink SP on 10.3.8, UL3D to a Huge Media vault and a Promax Firemax 800 RAID as backup. If I’m gonna put in Tiger, and the new Production Suite, what is the correct proceedure, what to connect/disconnect, what goes in first, (I understand from posts below I must install QT 7 first) and what are any gotchas/pitfalls to avoid?
Any advice form someone with a similar setup who has successfully put all this in would be a godsend.
Thanks!

May 21, 2005 at 2:43 pmDisconnect all Media Drives.
Back up everything, and do a clean install of 10.4. (this will install QT7)
Then upgrade via software update to 10.4.1.
Install FCP Studio (or upgrade). (this will give you QT7 pro).
Shut down.
Connect up the media drives, boot, and see if everything mounts.
I then recommend installing all applications that you use from their CDs and stop by each developers site and download the upgrades to the latest versions. The biggest problem is that people do not clean install. I am running 10.4.1 on a dual 2.7 with FCP 5 Studio AJA io. All is well here, except my scsi is giving me problems.

May 21, 2005 at 5:13 pmYup, so far so good. QT 7 player’s record function though dose not read the audio correctly but fcp works just fine.

If I do it this way, would I have to re-install FCP 4.5 and then do the upgrade to 5, or does it all load on it’s own?

May 21, 2005 at 10:42 pmI would advise against the Clean Install. I did just that and it disabled Motion and DVDSP. The reason is that there are essential components installed in various folders within the system. A clean install eliminates those components causing Motion and DVDSP to not launch. The solution is an absurdly complicated procedure of uninstalling over 50 files related to Motion, reinstalling Motion, reinstalling DVDSP and reinstalling Tiger. It’s a complete pain in the ass! I would suggest that you do a simple upgrade of Panther to Tiger and install Final Cut Studio in a normal manner. Naturally, it is prudent to back up various project files.

I would advise that you use Carbon Copy Cloner while still in Panther (cause it doesn’t work in Tiger, yet) and do an image copy of your boot drive to another drive.
Then insert the install DVD and Hold down the “C” key as you restart.
Choose to format and initialize the boot disk and then do a complete NEW install of Tiger on that drive.
After that is done successfully, start by installing the most necessary applications first and then the rest of the stuff you have/need.
This is a GREAT way to clean off junk from your system that you really don’t need anymore!

May 22, 2005 at 4:32 amIf the Studio installer dose not see a copy of FCP, it will prompt you for your FCP V1-4 SN#. No need to install 4.5 to move to 5.
