Snowing via the ATI 4870?
Posted by Walter Biscardi on August 23, 2009 at 12:12 amSo here’s a funny little quirk we’re getting. Mac Pro 2.93 (latest octo) with 16GB RAM and the ATI 4870 card driving two monitors.
On the full DVI cable I have a Dell WFP 24″ monitor.
On the Mini DVI adapter cable I have a Samsung 22″ monitor.
About every other time the monitors go to sleep, I’ll wake the Dell to snow. Just like you see on your TV when the signal goes away and you’re left with nothing but snow.
Turn off the Dell, turn it back on and it’s fine.
Now both monitors are connected via 35′ heavy duty DVI cables that I’ve been using for two years on my previous Mac Pro / ATI 2600 with no issues.
It’s nothing major since it goes away with a power cycle on the monitor, but was curious if anyone else is seeing this. Not gonna make me get rid of the card, that’s for sure. It totally smokes Color!

August 23, 2009 at 1:59 amThe test would be to walk the monitor to your computer and plug it directly in and let it sleep and see if it does it there. Dvi extension can be a tricky beast. If it does the same thing being plugged right in to the card, then you know it might be the card, if it doesn’t it might be a function of the extension.
We had a card go bad on us as soon as we extended it. Also, a Simple dvi repeater might help to refresh that signal.

August 23, 2009 at 6:18 amI use the Gefen 5500 HD DVI/USB extenders over cat 6 ethernet running 50 feet away. That said, I had an LG hooked up directly to the server running the final share storage. When I would start up I would get a ghosting image on every icon on the screen — dock icons, HD icons, etc. Turning off the monitor and turning it back on and the ghosting would go away. I thought it was a bad card. A lengthy chat with Apple Enterprise support and we tried a Samsung monitor. No ghosting.
Long story short. It might be the monitor.

We have two of these units running in our facility with runs of 65 and 95 feet. I’ll never buy them again. Too many “blinking screens” lately and we’re going to be replacing them with some $35 converters that simply plug into the ends of the Cat 5 / 6 cables.
Definitely not the monitor though. One of the first things I checked to ensure it was still functioning properly and it is.
I might go for the DVI repeater and see if that helps.

This is the Gefen DVI booster ($199). It works for DVI-D dual link extention for 30″ monitors, but you don’t have this problem – your monitor works fine, and looks fine until it goes to sleep – then snow.
I bet you 10 bucks this Gefen booster does absolutely nothing for your problem.

As for the blinking monitors. There are dip switches on the sender and receiver of the 5500 HD that boost signals for long runs. Also Gefen recommends shielded cat 5e cable– more expensive but should solve the blinking problem.
One last thing that contributes to this– adding furman power conditioners can also solve this if you have electricity in flux. This is different than APC surge protectors.
But give Gefen a call, they are like AJA, they go the extra mile. They invited me in to their office in California to solve a USB 2.0 over ethernet problem I was having. They didn’t let me leave until we figured it out.

That’s what we have. All custom cable runs made up by Bob Zelin.

Have four of them in the rack.

I’m glad you’ve had a good experience. We’ve had the opposite, maybe because we’re on the east coast.
