  Snow Leopard & .dmg issue

  I just upgraded from a 5-year old G5 to a new system running Snow Leopard. After downloading some software, I can’t get the system to open the .dmg files – all I get is a warning that the disc image can’t be recognized. I’ve attempted to open them with DiscImageMounter, Disc Utility, and Toast 10. No luck. Any thoughts or suggestions?
