Just wondering if anyone would know what could cause this. Our snapping turns off mystically. Even in the same project after you leave the machine alone for a few minutes the snapping goes bye bye. What would this be?

    Thanks for your help!

Do you inadvertently hit the “n” key?

    Otherwise-

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

    Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”

Click the following link for instructions.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

    https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
    or
    https://pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue/

This is one FCP tip that has helped in solving hundreds of “odd” problems.

    Hi Brett,

I get the same thing happening a lot. The keyboard command will turn it back on . . . but sometimes only for a cut or two, and then it’s off again. I even click on it’s icon and even that doesn’t keep it on very long SOME times. Other times i have no problem. I do the trash prefs thing, but it still seems like it shouldn’t happen so often. Oh well…

    thanks again!

Glad someone posted this. This is uber annoying. It has bugged me for quite a while but I just lived with it, along with all the other little things in our favorite “Pro” app.

The whole snapping thing got screwed up about two updates ago and then it got changed again or fixed. You might want to review your Waht’s New document (shoudl be under HELP) to see fi there’s a note you may have missed.
Mine appears to work normally these days but the screwup from a few months ago was associated with the OPTION key. One of those “fabulous new features no one asked for nor wanted and we haven’t really tested it but here it is”.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Ah, yes, the infamous option key snapping issue. We’re still running 6.02 where I work (we try to update all 3 systems at the same time for compatibility reasons, and never mid-project, so sometimes it takes a while before we can update them all), and every time Option is hit, it turns snapping on, no matter what you were pressing option for. This is the exact opposite of the problem it sounds like you’re having, though, so it could be that this is of absolutely no help to you 🙂

Best of luck, but best bet is most likely to back everything up and update to the latest and greatest flavor of Final Cut and Quicktime.

Great, I’m not crazy! I knew it. Think the next update should include no extra fx or filters, just fix the dang bugs!!
