Smoothing Shakey Footage Without Warp Stabilizer?
Hi,
I have a camera dolly on a flickering TV set and Warp Stabilizer can’t fix the move (I think it’s because of the flicker). So, basically, I wonder if there’s any way of smoothing out the shot in After Effects without resorting to the Warp Stabilizer, which doesn’t really seem to give you much control. If I were working in Nuke, I would track a part of the screen that didn’t have the flicker, then highlight the tracked keyframes and use a command to smooth them out. As far as I know, After Effects doesn’t have such a feature. Any suggestions on how to make this shot work with After Effects?

– You can also stabilize in mocha AE.
– You could track the TV screen, cover it up with something then stabilize that.
– You could use Nuke.

If I’m correct in understanding your question…you can use the motion tracker in AE (without bothering to leave the software)–it’s independent of Warp Stabilizer and lets you pick anchor/search areas (so you can ignore the screen itself).
Just go to window>workspace>Motion Tracking.

Thanks guys. Don’t know why I didn’t see your replies until now. I wanted to keep camera movement, but smooth it out. I don’t think the motion tracker in AE allows you to smooth camera movement the way the one in Nuke does. I’m not sure if Mocha has camera smoothing capabilities, but I’ll look into it.

mocha Pro has a stabilization module based on planar tracking. You can choose to lock down a shot OR smooth based on X,Y, rotation, scale and perspective. You can also select anchor frames to define what frames are smoothed the most. One highlight about this workflow is the user can stabilize based on select areas of the frame.
The mocha Pro stabilize module can render out finished frames OR export to After Effects, Nuke, Autodesk, etc.
Alternately, there is a manual way to use the bundled mocha AE and AE to smooth camera motion. This is an old tutorial but the concepts of importing track data, than using the AE smoother to edit the keys is still relevant. https://youtu.be/dq59Ua8THws
