  • Smoothing out Keyframes

Posted by David Cooke on November 18, 2007 at 5:59 am

While begining our “move” to Final Cut Pro systems at my work, we have found what we think
is a “limitation” to the “keyframing in the “motion” tab of FCP. When you try to make a “smooth” keframe on the “POSITION” atribute of a “basic motion” say on a super you want
to “fly-swoop” towards the screen, FCP DOES NOT give you that option. You can apply
“smooth” to “scale” and others. So you end up with a “ping-pong” type move and not
a smooth “swoop” effect. Can this be done in FCP? Or do you have to go into “Motion 3”.
to have total control over “smoothing out keyframes and moves you make with supers either
generated in FCP/Livetype/ or Photoshop. We produce/edit over 100 commercials every month and rely heavily upon graphics/textual supers for retail clients. We are all learning
with the Apple Pro Training Series from Diana Weynand.

you can EASE IN / EASE OUT the position by right clicking on the keyframe in the canvas.

long time problem with this in FCP is position and scale use two different scales.
one is exponential, one is logarithmic ???? or something like that
anyway the upshot is the SNAKE OF DOOM.
you’ll see what i mean when you try it

FCP FX guru Kevin Monohan says he works it out using BEZIER HANDLES in the canvas, the QUICKVIEW window, plus a fair amount of PATIENCE, i imagine
(quickview window is a window that loops a portion of your timeline while you tweak fx)
    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/basic_quickview.html

i remember Tom Wolsky once recommending using the Basic 3D filter instead of Motion Tab.

    there’s 3rd party solutions,
    such as Moving Pictures https://www.stagetools.com/
and Lyics Pan Zoom Pro https://www.lyric.com/fcp-plugins/index.htm#pzp

and of course there’s now Motion, which is probably worth looking into.

    cheers,

You must smooth the position keyframes in the Canvas. You can set “Easay IN/Easy OUT” too and and control the IN/OUT speed.Click the keyframes and drag the dotted line.

[NickM] “i remember Tom Wolsky once recommending using the Basic 3D filter instead of Motion Tab. “
    Nick,
The problem is that if you use “Rotation” in the Motion tab, the rendering is done as “Fastest” (lineal) even if you have set Motion Filtering Quality to “Best”. This is a limitation of FC.
So if you intend to rotate any thing in FC, better to use a 3D filter.

    really?
    didn’t know that.
for the whole timeline, or just that effect?

Really? I’ve never noticed that in any of our work.

    Walter.
You find that information in the FC Manual (lll-262): “When you adjust a clip’s Rotation parameter, the clip is automatically rendered using the Fastest motion filtering quality”.
I use the free “Andy Better 3D”.

I guess that affect to the clip in the TL that you have changed those parameters.
There is some more information in the FC manual (lll-667). This is like that since FC have the Motion Rendering options (FC4.5 ?).

    VideoMilkMan,

Keyframing in FCP is almost worthless. It is just one of the basic functionalities Apple has ignored since day one, in favor of glitzy, market-worthy cosmetic BS. Don’t get me started…

    Have a wonderful day.
