Something that may help (if you choose to go with time-remapping) is to take a still of the scene and just keyframe its position over the top, using the same start and end positions. This will provide you with a perfectly smooth pan which you can then reference for realigning points of the footage to match up with it.

(alternatively, I might even try cheating with a still as the final!). You could even add a bit of lens distortion around the edge of the frame to add a bit of imperfection, and a X-axis wiggle of a few pixels so that the pan isn’t PERFECTLY smooth. Probably wouldn’t be acceptable in most situations though 🙂

Thanks for the replies guys, I ended up tracking/stabilising and keyframing the position.

Mark Christiansen(from the orphanage) Covers this in his AE studio technique books (6.5 -7. and now updated to cs4 page 252 in cs4 print of book”stabalizing a moving shot”)

Basically you track the motion of the shot (a stabalize track ) – creat null w 3D enabled- – select all ANCHOR POINT keyframes fromstabalized shot – copy those keys to null – apply smooth expression(premade in expressions menu) to null..you can change values but default can be decent .. – AND PARENT your camera to the NULL– and LASTLY BUY HIS BOOK it really really helps anyone from beginer to expert in differetn ways..
