    I want to smooth cam a clip in my timeline that is about 8sec long, but it was taken from the master that is about 40min. Is there a way to smooth cam just the 8sec without having to export it as a separate file?

    I believe the newest version of FCP addresses that problem, at least it does in Motion. What version are you on?

    You should just be able to apply the filter to the clip in the timeline and select your levels. Try making it a subclip and that should work.
