Smooth Audio Fade
Posted by Paul Martin on December 5, 2010 at 9:56 pmAnybody else frustrated by the 2 pittyful audio fade transitions on FCP?? If i want music to fade out smoothly.. i have to painfully construct a keyframed fade out to avoid that sharp cut effect you get when you use the transistion
Is there a plugin out there that can do simply a smooth audio fade without having to send it to STP? Somebody please say there is as using STP for my whole project will be EPIC.
Many thanks! P

December 5, 2010 at 10:38 pmGood question! I too have been wondering this, although it sounds a little like a “magic plugin” which people are not fans of…

December 5, 2010 at 11:23 pmFading audio depends entirely on it’s context in an overall mix plus the dominant frequencies. A plugin can’t know what is needed. Plugin fades are based on basic curve shapes. FCP, as an editing device doesn’t handle audio post so don’t expect it to sprout a whole lot of audio niceness or for developers to worry much about developing audio plugins.
The answer to your question is to make a fade using the mixer panel. This means you can fade how the ear hears in real time by grabbing the fader with the mouse or using a remote external fader on an attached mixer.

December 6, 2010 at 1:06 amThanks Michael… appreciate the reply.
I do that sometimes but still find it frustrating if i need to move keyframes etc when making a clip longer/shorter. Genuinely – 9/10 my fade outs are pretty much the same. I go from my set leval to -80% within 1.5 seconds – then the other 1second i fade from -80% -> -100% of it… pretty standard.
I appreciate FCP isn’t an audio editing but this is real simple feature that would save a LOT of time in post audio production.. if i can, i don’t want to send a whole project into STP! I just want to click export 🙂
I’d love to keep the comments open for more suggestions if anyone has any? Thanks guys – Paul

December 6, 2010 at 8:23 amHi Michael – a question considering this: If I pull down the Fader on the Audio Mixer – that is nice, but how do you make FCP remember that? Can you record Fader moves in FCP? That would be awesome.
Greetings,
Sascha

December 6, 2010 at 8:25 amI am having the same nightmare over and over – the standard transition fade is doing a lousy job and keyframing is a headache as well – cause they are curved K’s not linear. That definately would be some upgrade to FCP! Let me know, if you ever find a solution!

Sascha

December 6, 2010 at 10:42 amI don’t use FCP for audio work but from memory, there is an icon on the mixer page that lets you record the mixer movements by automatically making keyframes. Check your manual to enable keyframe automation with the mixer.

December 17, 2010 at 4:53 pmI am also looking for a more standard audio fade than the 2 available in the “effects” tab but with the same ease of use. I’ll keep an eye on this thread to see if anyone has suggestions.
