I have a brief where the client wants a number of key words to resembnle smoke that become filtered through their air purifier. I have looked at the smoke tutorial in the tuts section however where the tutorial has a basic mask to be used as a wall when I bring in a mask from illustrator that is a key word, the smoke fails to follow the wall. Any ideas please.

Create the letters using the text tool

Next, create a new comp and create the smoke using fractal noise

Now use that new comp as a displacement map and a luma matte for the text. Play around with transparency and very eased position keyframes.

You should be able to get something really smoky with this.

You can also dupe the text and offset the second layer by using blur and different displace amounts.

    Regards

If you have Trapcode Particular, they have good presets on trapcode-people dot net . You could send me your footage at my adress with a short description on how you want the text, and what is the word you want to “smokey”.

    Good luck!
