Here is a screen cap of my gun.

Here’s the effect i’m hoping to achieve.

I’m still tinkering with motion tracking, and having the smoke curls be affected when she lowers the gun. The effect I can’t seem to make work is making the smoke look like it’s coming from farther back of the barrel. Making the smoke look like it’s traveling up the barrel and curling around the end of the muzzle and then traveling up.

I do know that i’ll have to create an additional layer of the left side of the gun, but I can’t make the curl at the muzzle work. Can someone please help with this.

    Thanks so much
    JR

If you look at your example, the only visible smoke comes from the bottom of the barrel. The barrel itself is quite dark. I think I’d fake the depth by using an adjustment layer over the barrel to darken the smoke inside the barrel, so that only a wisp remains.

If you’re not satisfied with that approach, why not fake it further with a Bulge effect set to pinch the origin of the smoke, so that it appears to be coming from further back.
