  • Smoke and Matte – how to do this cool effect???

Posted by Steve To on August 12, 2007 at 8:45 pm

    Hi,

been watching a music video by Natalie Imbruglia – “Smoke” you can see it here..

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPZ0WwkKweg

Now, can anyone point me to how I might re-create this effect of smoke fading in/out of a subject in the shot. Obviously the backgrounds are very plain in this one, so would have to shoot carefully but HOW would I do anything like this? I have Final Cut Studio 2 but not after effects or anything, so would be using FCP and Motion I guess?

Any help, tips and guidance very gratefully received.

    Thanks in advance 🙂

It looks like she was shot on Green screen. Then inside the matte, a simple soft wipe up from the bottom with some stock smoke footage. Nothing too hard really.

You’ll find smoke footage in the motion library. Create a black/white gradient moving underneath the smoke to make a travel matte you can use in FCP. That should replicate the effect you see in the video. Not sure I’m that fond of it, seems a bit thrown together, but I guess she doesn’t sell as many records these days…. 😉
