  • S.M.A.R.T. Status for external HDDs?

I’ve recently gotten a ‘S.M.A.R.T. Status: Failing’ warning during one of my regular Disk Utility sessions on an Internal HDD I store part of my edit projects on. Sucks to see that but it gave me enough lead time to migrate all my data out. Not sure when the drive will finally fail though, but guess I’ll have to request for a RMA with Seagate since it’s only been 2 yrs.

That said, I also have a collection of bare external HDDs that I use to back up materials and archive projects on. We’re a small shop, our projects don’t span long timelines and so we don’t have the need for LTO yet – so this works well enough for now.

But from this episode, I realized I can’t check the S.M.A.R.T. status on these external HDDs (they’re connecting via Firewire with a dock)… so like to ask for advice on whether there are any ways for me to do regular checks on these bare drives’ health?
