  • Smallest possible laptop for running XPress Pro? Any ideas?

    Hi there.

Does anyone have any idea of some slim/ultraportable notebooks that are Avid Xpress HD compatible, even if they aren’t listed as ‘officially compatible’ on Avid’s site?

I’m looking at buying a new notebook or laptop and although the Dell M90 that I use at the moment works well, I’m really looking for a lighter, more portable solution, even if it means plugging in an external drive.

    Thanks in advance.

Ok, I am NOT an expert, and it would be pretty bad if you were to rely on this and end up with something that doesn’t work. Given that . . .
I’ve run express pro on a Sony Vaio SZ140 (current model is the SZ360 I think, it’s the only 13″ screen portable by Sony). I bought it for personal uses, being able to run Avid on it is truly a bonus. The unit had an express card slot. I use it with a Ridtec(?) SATA express card (about $100), and a 320 gig SATA portable hard drive (the newer version, I think it’s SATA 3). I have to reboot when I want to use it with the card, and then reboot it when I’m done, the express card shares the same IRQ as the graphics card (scary). I haven’t run it with the purpose of loading it to the gills in order to test it, but I was editing Panasonic 1280×720 24PN HD with effects, and it worked flawlessly.
Also, keep in mind that others shudder at the thought of running Avid on a Sony anything.
    Good luck!

Correction: the card I use with the computer is an Addonics Express Card 34. It’s RAID5/JBOD, but I’ve not used it with the RAID configuration.
