Small unintended pause at edit points?
Posted by Graham Blake on October 12, 2011 at 7:01 pmAt SOME of my edit points (of course not all) there appears to be a slight pause. I’m not using any transitions or anything; they’re just plain ol’ jump cuts. I exported the video to quicktime and the pauses exported too. When watching frame-by-frame there is no problem. What gives?

thanks to your question I discovered some files are 29.97 fps/ 720×480, while others are 23.98 fps/ 1920×1080.
Sequence preset DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic -

sequence settings are the same as files, HDTV 1080i (16:9) -

October 13, 2011 at 1:09 pmI think the H.264 codec may be causing the hesitations. It’s not an edit codec for FCP. It’s an interframe codec which means it builds individual frames by looking at the frames around it. At every edit while playing, FCP has to do the math in real time to figure out where it is and build the frame it should display. The time it takes to do that is probably the hesitation. You should transcode H.264 to Pro Res or another edit codec before editing. Good edit codecs for FCP are intraframe codecs meaning there are discrete, full frames (24 in your case) every second. There’s much less processing involved to display those frames.
