Small HD camcorder

Any HDV camera will work with FCP. It has to be a true HDV camera that works with that codec.

That Panasonic may be a true HDV camera, but it records in AVCHD which I don’t believe is supported in Final Cut. At least not yet.

Which is exactly what we said in the thread directly below. That’s why I said any “true” HDV camera, which actually records in the HDV codec.

AVCHD is not HDV. I’m not sure any NLE supports this format yet.

I have a Canon HV20 camcorder, and I’m pretty happy with the results. Plenty of other owners are, too. Check the video websites.

AVCHD is not, as you’ve said supported by ANY NLE software at the moment. Plans by Sony are to have it working in their Vegas software soon, there are however ways to transcode your AVCHD media to QuickTime if you’ve got the coding skills, the time and the patience of a saint…

Avid now supports native AVCHD editing with their Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Version 11. It is available now from Amazon for 74.99, after rebate.

Both Avid and Adobe have pledged support for AVCHD, I hope Apple will soon. I purchased a panasonic HDC-SD1 and have archived lots of AVCHD files I’d like to edit. I’ve ordered Pinnacle so I can do this. I’ll archive all the results for future use with FCP (I HOPE!).

I bought the camera for its size (fits in a coat pocket while skiing), three CCDs, and psuedo HD format. It’s my first jump into HD, I’ll likely be purchasing another prosumer camcorder which supports real HD soon.
