Im working on a new MBP, 2.3Ghz i7, 16G RAM, media is on external USB 3.0 drive.

I have a multicam sequence made up of 2 streams of AVCHD media with 4 additional track of 48Khz .aiff audio. Performance is extremely sluggish. Should I have transcoded the media prior importing it?

seems like you are pushing the envelope there with the system
    specs you listed.

Are you editing at full resolution?

is it sluggish with the program monitor set for 1/2 or 1/4 resolution?

To expand on my specs: it is a Quad Core 2.3Ghz and I have the additional Nvidia GeForce GFX card.

Seriously? A two camera multicam clip is pushing the limits of my system? Avid and FCP7 could handle this with ease (granted it would be transcoded and not camera media). Premiere seems to be much more powerful than either Avid or FCP 7 and should handle this easy. I must be doing something wrong. I imported the original/raw media. Is AVCHD difficult to work with? Should it be converted prior to import?

I am working at 1/4 resoulution.

Your system seems more than adequate, the usb 3 drive could “possibly” be part of it.
is it actually a usb3 connection on your system?

I would think 1/4 res with two streams of avchd should be smooth on your setup.

I find converting AVCHD footage to be a wasteful step, I don’t think
    it would make a difference.

Chris, The drive is a CalDigit AV drive and the MBP is USB 3. Blackmagic speed test give me around 130Mbs. Should be plenty fast.
