    Hello again

i just love how all these frikkin video formats play along so well…HA HA HA

I have a bunch of footage captured on an FCP system (not mine) in PAL widescreen DV25

I can drop it onto an 29.97 DV50 widescreen comp (my main show) and it shows up! if i render it it even plays, but jittery

    Sooo

I slow it down to 83.42 percent which changes the frame rate from 25 to 30, adn it should play back smooth (but a little slower, which is OK its just b roll no sound)

    HOWEVER

it judders once a second, like its jumping back a half frame. Its really noticeable on pans and titlts. shouldnt it just play real smooth?

I have tried various iterations around 83.42 percent, like 83.14 etc, and it still doesn this judder

    any ideas?

    thanx again ye all

Try exporting one of these clips to Compressor and use the advanced format conversion to have it match your sequence settings… might look better.

    Hey Bob,

If your timeline is running at 30fps and you put a 25fps clip in, where are the extra 5 frames per second coming from???

Answer: On the simplist level (as FCP does it natively) they are going to simply be randomly duplicated frames, and if five random frames out of every second sit on screen for twice as long as all other frames, that’s gonna make any smooth motion herky jerky.

Solution: Get a conversion filter such Graeme Natress’, which does a much more sophisticated job than just adding five random frames per second.

    Hope this helps,
    David

Slowing down a clip in the timeline doesn’t change its frame rate. Your PAL clips in your NTSC timeline remain PAL clips, with a native rate of 25fps, even after you slow them down.
