I’ve been practicing shooting with my Sony HXR-NX70u cams in the PS mode (60P) with the intent of adding some slo-mo features to the clips. During testing, I added the clips to the timeline and changed the velocity using the video envelope feature, but can not seem to get the playback to be anything but jerky. The literature with the camera states “Its full HD 1920×1080 recordings can be slowed down to 24P during post production for beautiful 2.5 slow motion“. I can’t seem to achieve this although I think I’m close. I don’t know if the lack of smoothness is a function of my computer specs (Core2 quad-2.4GHz, 4GB mem, GPU Raedon X1950 PRO) or something else. Suggestions?

You can check if it is related to computer power by rendering a section and playing it back. Try “Build dynamic RAM preview” on the tools menu (shift-b). You may want to increase the RAM set aside for RAM previews in Options|Preferences|video tab.

When you change an event velocity, you are forcing the editing program to re-render every frame – again. It already had to decode the frames between the iFrames, all in real time. A tall order for any PC.

As Jeff said, this is what RAM preview was intended for.

    60/24=2.5
so you need to slow down the video to 2.5 times
Right click an event and choose Properties > Playback rate. Set it to 0.4
(the frame rate of your project should be 24fps)

I did as you suggested and saw some improvement when I increased the RAM availability. However, I think I shot myself in the foot by testing with some footage I took from a moving vehicle. The vehicle vibration is probably contributing to the problem which I can see as I examine it frame by frame. So I’m off to shoot some tripod footage and remove one variable from the equation.
    Thanks, Brad
