This is my first post, so bear with me. I Have been making game videos for a few years now, but in the past have just slapped the whole 10 Minute video into the timeline above some commentary, and had never really needed to do a major edit on my videos. Recently, a friend of mine asked me to put together a montage for him. I am working with it and things are going smoothly (I have done real life camera edits before), until I get to the parts that need to be slowed down. My clips are recorded at 59.94 FPS on a Hauppauge HD PVR H.264 encoder. From there, I move the clips into Sony Vegas Premiere 11, and begin editing. My issue is that when I reduce my clips speed by 50%, it becomes jumpy and the quality of the video itself is reduced. A 60% sharpen FX helps with the quality, but I can’t seem to find a fix for the jumpiness of the clip. I have tried rendering the clip in a separate project with interpolated fields, and rendering it with a lossles codec, as one source on the internet suggested, but it seems to look the same as the original clip when slowed down. I have also tried changing the undersample rate to 50% (29.975 FPS) and reducing the speed there with no luck. No change with Smart, Force, or no resample either. I’m beginning to think it can’t be done. Is there any other way I can go about this to make it look smoother? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are certain image sequences that Vegas just can’t make a good slow motion version of on it’s own. It sounds like you have tried all that you can inside standard Vegas. Good film quality slow motion is recorded at a 100+ frame rate so even 60 fps will not be enough to get that smooth look you may be seeing in your head. One solution (and maybe the best solution) unfortunately costs around $330 US. Twixtor is a great plug-in that creates in between frames of decent to amazing quality depending on how much contrary motion is happening along the edges of objects. Without something like Twixtor even the better algorithms in After Effects or Final Cut Pro produce jumpy results and they are miles better than what Vegas produces.
