[Ricardo Guerreiro] “I will post feedback to Apple but since it seems everybody thinks it is perfectly natural to have 4 extra steps on their workflow maybe I’m the one that’s nuts. Sorry, in that case. “

    Ricardo,

Nice job making sarcastic comments to people who have taken the time to give you free advice.

    Good luck with that.

Alan, I’m really sorry if I offended you. It was not my intent. But I’m really amazed by FCP not having this feature and other people seem to think it’s just normal, really, I began to wonder “maybe the problem is just mine”. You’re right about the sarcastic comment, should not have done it but I made it without intent to offend anyone. When I wrote it I was just not trying to imply anything about you or Shane for that matter. I’m just thinking, again, that maybe I’m the one not seeing this right.

No problem, Ricardo. Maybe I’m just a little testy this morning – haven’t had my coffee yet!

You’re not alone in coming across some of FCP’s quirks and idiosyncrasies. I have a list of my own that’s a mile long. Unfortunately the best we can do is to try to find workarounds and petition Apple to address our concerns in the next version. At this price point, there aren’t really any better options.

Here’s my wishlist written back before FCP 7 came out. Most of my complaints still stand.

    Good luck.

People accept these steps because for those of us who have been in the business for a while, we are glad that we even HAVE these steps. That we don’t have to send it out to a post facility with a Terranex and have it converted tape to tape and cost an arm and a leg.

Now…let me clear some things up here about GOP, MOTION and FCP. FCP plays footage in real time. It is designed to play footage in real time. That is the purpose of an edit system, to be able to play back the footage in real time, frame accurately, so you can edit. Formats with the GOP structure take a LOT of processing power for FCP just to play back properly. Now try to have it convert to slow motion while it is doing this? No way!

Motion. Motion DOES NOT play back in real time. The playback can vary from 2fps to 60fps, depending on the footage you are working with and the power of the graphics card. But it isn’t designed to play back in real time. Motion is designed in a way, like After Effects, so that you build your effects and then RENDER THEM OUT as self contained files. Even when you SEND TO Motion, if your composition is complex, FCP will require that you render it (thus making a self contained QT file in the form of a render file.)

So this doesn’t work in FCP, Avid, Premiere… how many other NLEs are there? Vegas…Edius…Liquid… Do ANY of these support this simple request of yours? I don’t think so. Because despite what you might think, it isn’t a SIMPLE request. It is a small matter of writing the code. The code between MOTION and FCP differs, because they work differently.

Many many people feel that editing is simple. Throw in video, piece it together quickly, and bam, you’re done in a day or two. Why would it take someone 9 months to edit a feature film? 6 weeks to edit a 1 hour documentary? 3-4 weeks to edit one episode of say LAW AND ORDER? I mean, really, you are just taking the footage and putting it in the right order, right? No, it is far more complex than that. How many times have you had new or clueless clients who are amazed at how long editing takes, and that it should just be a matter of easily arranging the footage?

Unless you know how to code, I wouldn’t make statements like “I’m sure it would be a matter of a couple of code lines in the writing of FCP” unless you know what writing code for FCP entails.

Cinema Tools worked perfectly for me. I conformed my 59.94 720p H.264 files from my Canon T2i to 29.97. It was very fast with no loss of quality. Before you conform any files, make sure you’ve made copies of any files you wish to keep in their original, higher frame rate. It’s very easy to take a 59.94 file and bring it down to 29.97, but it’s not so simple to go the other way. Good luck!

I’ve run across this problem recently in FCP7 as well. Unchecking the “frame blending” option from the speed change does nothing. I honestly cannot get 60p to smooth 30p with the aid of some plug-in.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve never had this problem with Premiere. Put a 60p clip down in a 24p timeline, slow it 40% of original speed, and I get smooth slow motion. Is this not actually true slow motion? I’ve uploaded several videos to YouTube using this method, and I’ve never seen any frame artifacts or skipping at all. Just smooth slo-mo. I don’t think it’s too good to be true, but I am troubled that something so simple in PPro can be so mind-boggling, unnecessarily complicated to do in FCP7.

Why can’t FCP just LET you properly slow down 60p to your desired 30p or 24p frame rate?

It’s not designed to. That’s why you use Cinema Tools to CONFORM the footage:

Right. So then to my other question, why is it so simple in PremierePro? Why didn’t FCP just “design” their NLE to not have to go through Cinema Tools?

I’m just curious, not being devious.

    ok call me stupid…
but when I bought the HVX200 it was working with FCP 5 or whatever version with some P2 plug-in…..

Why do I have footage on my hard drive that plays back at 60fps….

but just recently….I shot in FILM MODE 24p and 60frames and it shows in the viewer 60P

I never remember that being an issue…

But I log and Transfer like I did with my CANON…..and the P2 interface now has some AVC INTRA and to PRORES

I get it in the time line,…..and now it says SEQ 23.98……but it plays back at 59.97!!!!!!! why?

I over cranked it…..it used to playback slow-motion…..why is this not working now? is there something they changed after FCP 7? that FCS? makes everything wrong?

I went back to read my HVX200 book…and it says all the gobble gook…about frame rates and shutter angles….I remember it being much easier……..it just played back on the camera.>

am I doing something wrong? or is my camera broken? FILM SPEED….24p 720p 180shutter angle….60FRAMES

it shows 60P in the window…..and when I play it back it looks like video!!!!!

what is going on….I wanted it to play at 24fps

so something is now going over my head……

it has been awhile since I had to do in camera

but all my footage i have on my drive plays back slow motion…

is it TRANSFERING and RECOMPRESSING? is that the issue?

oh gad……..I am going back to film! 2perf 35 never sounded more tasty

    [singleton makin]
Why do I have footage on my hard drive that plays back at 60fps….”

One of the formats that camera shoots is 720p60. In fact, that is the standard frame rate for 720p…60fps.

[singleton makin] “but just recently….I shot in FILM MODE 24p and 60frames and it shows in the viewer 60P”

Unless you shoot 720p 24pN, the footage will be 60fps with the 24p “look” on it. Setting the camera to 720p 24pN makes the camera record the footage at 23.98fps. ONLY that setting will get that frame rate.

[singleton makin] “But I log and Transfer like I did with my CANON…..and the P2 interface now has some AVC INTRA and to PRORES”

Because later P2 cameras shot a different format than DVCPRO HD…later P2 cameras shot AVCIntra. And that could be brought in as AVCIntra, or transcoded to ProRes. Unfortunately DVCPRO HD could only come in as DVCPRO HD.

[singleton makin] “I get it in the time line,…..and now it says SEQ 23.98……but it plays back at 59.97!!!!!!! why?”

What says that? Are your sequence settings 23.98, or 60fps? And yes, as I said, if you shot 720p24, it’ll still be recorded at 59.94fps. Only 24pN gets 23.98.

[singleton makin] “I over cranked it…..it used to playback slow-motion…..why is this not working now? is there something they changed after FCP 7? that FCS? makes everything wrong?”

Ahhhhh…. That’s what you mean. Hmmm…there was a setting in the camera to do that…shoot 720p60 but RECORD it at 23.98fps, and be slow motion. But it’s been years since I owned that camera, I can’t recall the setting for that. Look in the manual.

[singleton makin] “I went back to read my HVX200 book…and it says all the gobble gook…about frame rates and shutter angles….I remember it being much easier……..it just played back on the camera.>”

Ah…it’s there somewhere…I know it. I did this too, but then preferred to do this later, in post. In case I wanted the footage to play normal speed.

[singleton makin] “am I doing something wrong? or is my camera broken?”

No, it’s just some setting you need to get right.

    [singleton makin]
it shows 60P in the window…..and when I play it back it looks like video!!!!!”

Yes…60p is very VERY smooth playback, which is why it’s used for sports. ABC, ESPN, FOX are 720p60 networks.

    [singleton makin]
is it TRANSFERING and RECOMPRESSING? is that the issue?”

No…DVCPRO HD comes in as DVCPRO HD. There’s some setting in the camera that will record 720p at 23.98 and be slow motion. There are like 4 settings…720p60 at 60fps smooth as video…720p24 that records the 24p look at 60fps….720p 24pN that shoots 23.98 and records 23.98, and one other setting to record 60fps at 23.98fps slow motion.
