If you use the 720P/60 capture setting to record say 48fps. Can I drop that clip into a 24fps time line with no rendering or conversion needed and it will play back in slow motion? Do you also use the 720P/60 capture setting for 24 frame capture then as well?

Are you talking about recording from the camera to FCP through firewire or off of P2 cards?

Eric I can’t guide you with 100% accuracy as I don’t have a HVX-200 yet…

But according to the manual you would set the camera to 720/24p (not 24pn) set it to FILM CAM mode and set the framerate to 48 fps.

Then you capture in the 720/60p preset in fcp and use the framerate converter to make it 24fps again. Then the clip will playback at 24 fps in your sequence, and give you a 50% effect.

You could also just set the camera to 720/60p, capture in 720/60p then use cinematools to conform to 25 fps. that will give you a clip with a 40% slow effect.

I wanted to record straight to disc via firewire, no P2. It’s a studio shoot and it’s more for convenience. I can use the P2 card but no problem but I was looking to save the transfer time since I won’t be running around in the field.

Okay, then you need to shoot 720p24 and then digitize straight to FCP (but you will lose any timecode info). In FCP you will capture with the 720p24 easy setup if you plan on editing 24p. If you want offspeed, then capture 720p60 (with your camera still in 24p mode) and use the frame rate converter later. With the P2 card, you could set the camera to 24pN mode and the frame rate for 24p and have regular motion 24p stuff. Then you keep it in 24pN mode and set the frame rate to 60 and you’ll have slow motion. YOu can then preview that slow motion right off the P2 to make sure you got it right. Just make to switch back to 24pN:24 if you want to go back to regular motion.

You can record different speeds direct to the P2 card in 720p 24pN mode.
Variable 12-60 fps. In FCP you use the 720 24p easy set-up.
Plays back the speed you set. 32 looks good to add a subtle slo-mo
60 looks awesome, especially if you experiment with different shutter speeds.
I have shot 48 fps and then speeded that up 50% and it you need the action back to
a regular speed. But whats cool is to shoot 48 and do a ramp from
50% to 100% that gives you the Matrix effect. And then of course you have interval recording which is another topic for discussion.
