    Hi There all

    I am relatively new to FCP editing but am somewhat “in at the deep end” on an 9 minute documentary project shot HDV, downconverted to DV (pal). The director wants quite alot of motion effects and here’s where the problem lies. At slow speeds some of the shots look very jerky and low quality. I have checked over the field order (FCP works in lower right?) and still it looks a bit wierd. I have also used output to tape to “force” render everything (is that a good strategy?).

    Im heading into the online today so any ideas much appreciated

    cheers

    Andy

    Apply some light Motion Blur to your speed effected clips. Most folks don’t realize that this feature helps to smooth out slo-mo’s as well. it’s in the Motion Tab just below the Drop Shadow tab.

    Turn down the % to as little as 25 and the samples all the way up to their highest setting.

    Word of warning, this adds a LOT of render time so my suggestion would be to test one particular clip to get the smoothness you want, then don’t apply this setting to the rest of the clips until you’re all done and ready for your final render.

    thanks for the tip walter.
    Mazdep, in terms of rendering, if you go to the sequence menu, and select the dark green line in the render selection option, it will render the items that work in real time. Highlight the clip you want to render and apple-r will render it. Its only dv that works in lower (odd) field dominance, nit just FCP. depending on the compression, the field dominance changes, for eaxmple 8bit uncompressed Sd is upper (even) field.

    [Nick] “Mazdep, in terms of rendering,”

    Actually you just reminded me of one more thing, the Video Processing tab. You want to turn that to Best Quality for the best looking slo-mo’s.

    Sequence Settings > Video Processing > Motion Filtering Quality. Default is Normal, but you want Best for the best looking overall renders.

    Don’t believe that’s true. Uncompressed is lower field first.

    Upper = Pal
    Lower = NTSC
