Slo-motion (32 fps +) in 720p…???
Posted by Tony Cope on March 10, 2007 at 1:02 pmOK, I think I read that you can not record slo-motion (high speed fps) in the HD 720p setting. You have to use the 1080i setting?
Then, why is the various rate rates available in the 720p mode. I’m just thinking over this after recording to the p2 card in 720p mode – and my high frame rate stuff recorded at standard 24 fps. Guess I’m posting this to make sure I understand what’s going wrong… as well as express frustration at being able to set frame rates that I do not actually have access to.
Thoughts?
Thanks,

nope you have it backwards the VFR is only in 720

what is not correct here? When you capture off speed material the playback frame rate is based on how you set the camera the content is slowed based on what you tell the camera to do and your did you want 30P instead?

if you can set the frame rate it is available. It seems that you have been misinformed.

March 10, 2007 at 3:53 pmOK – glad I posted, because I am now completely confused.
I had my camera set to 720p – and the frame rate to 36 fps. It plays off of the P2 card and in FCP as regular speed footage. ??? I know I’ve shot in 36 fps and the playback was slo-mo… but lately it hasn’t worked.
I was assuming I had read it would only work in either 720p or 1080i (one or the other) and since it didn’t work in 720p, I assumed it was suppose to be set in 1080i. (That’s why I was frustrated that I could set for high speed, but the result was standard speed.) I thought maybe the image was hard to tell if it was in slo-mo, but the voices recorded off the camera mic play back normal…
Let’s see, I have the camera set to:
720/24p – 180.0d
frame rate – 36 fpsAny thoughts on what I am doing wrong? Regardless of how I set my sequences in FCP — shouldn’t the footage playback in slomo off the P2 card?
Thanks for the help,
Tony -

March 10, 2007 at 5:01 pmYou’re using 720/24p mode, instead of 720/24pN. Put it in 24pN and you’ll see the slow-mo effect immediately on playback.

March 11, 2007 at 5:33 amThis begs the question: if you switch from 720p24 to 720p24PN in the same setup (easy setup for 720p24), will this affect anything??

Yes…you will go from shooting 59.94 to shooting 23.98.

March 11, 2007 at 2:59 pmOK – so from the original question: do you think I actually recorded at a high frame rate, but maybe I need to make sure my sequence in FCP is set to 24fps…??? Still not sure why 36 fps would play back normal speed, regardless if the sequence is 24 fps or 60 fps… seems it would playback faster than real time if the sequence is 60, and slower than real time if sequence is at 24 fps.
Thanks,
Tony -

what does the footage look like when you go thru it frame by frame?
if it is not a 3 dupe frames then 2 dupe frames it is not 24 fps is it is some other frame rate.if you are using FCP 5.1 or later – in the “Extras” folder on the install disk is the software frame rate converter, install per instructions and then run the FRC on the clip you captured in error. IF it was shot off speed the FRC will allow you to extract the redundant un needed frames..
