slightly OT – Using Automator to access compressor then FTP
Hi all,
I’m doing loads of compressing at the moment and each compressed file needs FTPing once it’s finished. The files are compressed overnight and are usually finished by about 3am. It would be great to have a client sit down at 9am and have an email saying that their upload was done rather than me getting in at 7am and starting the uploads.
I was thinking that Automator would be perfect for this job but I can’t see any of Compressor’s options inside Automator.
I can see options for Transmit so that’s that part of the problem solved but how can I get Automator to recognise Compressors actions?If (as I suspect) Automator will not speak to Compressor (and as they’re not speaking, they should be sent into a small room and forced to get along), does anyone know of another way that this process could be automated.

What you need are folder actions, not actions with Compressor. When a file is not in use and has been added to the folder, instruct the finder to copy the file into the determined location.

If you can mount your ftp server on your desktop, you can specify it as a remote destination. Just make the destination folder beforehand with your ftp client.
And if you setup your compressor email server specifications correctly in compressor’s preferences and then specify an email address in the compression preset, compressor will both upload the file and also email you when it is done.
I am wondering if anyone has figured out how to get an email automatically generated that contains the ftp server path.
Now that would be awesome!

I wrote an article about exactly what you’re asking, using Compressor to compress and Automator to upload. I also write about a way to make an Automator droplet that will both compress and upload just by dragging a file onto it. It feels good.
