I have just finished a video/ AE Animation for a nationwide contest for high school students. While I am familiar with AE, I am not farmiliar with hardware related issues and terminology. On the submission form I was asked to submit via mini DV which I can do. I was then told to keep natural sound on channel 1, and music on channel 2. I don’t know what that part about the channels means. I know audio can have a left and right channel but I don’t know what they mean when they say that they want the natural sound and music on separate channels. Any help/wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks.

It means pan the nat sound to the left (channel 1) and pan the music to the right (channel 2). I think you can do this in AE, but I’m sure whatever you use to go to tape (like FCP or Premiere) can do it also.

This is so they can use one audio track without using the other, or they can mix the levels however they wish.

Don’t worry about having it sound bad having music from one side and nat sound from the other – they will (or should) mono mix it out on their end
