    Hey guys,

wanted to see if this is a known problem. A colleague edited a sequence in AVID and then exported out a QT using the H.264 codec (he did this a few times changing the pixel ration from square to 601 and so on).

Thew QT plays fine in Quicktime player, BUT it seems to artifact within the FCP viewer window. I don’t think it’s interlacing or anything after talking with him over the phone, just fragmented video. Again, plays fine in QT player.

Any thoughts about why this is happening?

H264 is not an editing codec but a deliver codec, so the transcode from h264 to whatever codec you are working with in FCP is breaking down.

Do you know of some editing codecs that I can use out of avid that might read in FCP?

    Thanks Jeremy,

What I’ve told him to do (since his avid sequence was native hdv) is to export his h264 qt to an hdv qt, so he can then edit it in fcp. I would normally tell him to export it out directly from avid as an hdv qt but he claims not to have that option.

Is my suggestion the way to go? If not, what is the bets plan of attack?

    thanks in advance.

Coupla Tree ideas. (Sorry my Chicago accent gets in the way sometimes. Go bearssssss)

Install the Avid codec on your FCP mac.

Export to a cross platform codec. PhotoJPEG @ 75% would do it.

Or if you want to spend some dough, try the Sheer codec. It’s perfect for this sort of thing.

You can also exchange an image sequence.
