I am new to web design and have created buttons in Photoshop, but would like to know if the button layers have to be merged before you can optimise and slice them.?
Just in case I have to come back and alter them.
    Thanks

No. When you output slices from Photoshop, all of the pixels visible within a slice are used, regardless of which or how many layers they are on.

I have a button with three layers in Photoshop CS I selected Group from Layers and named the group Button1.
When I go to Layers>New Layer based Slice its greyed out.
I cannot create a slice, the only way I seem to be able to do so is the Merge the layers.
    Thanks

Yeah, it looks like you can’t make a slice from a Layer Set/Layer Group.

If all of your layers are the same size, just pick one of them (or if there’s one that’s larger and fits over all the others) and use the layer-based slice command.

Otherwise you can duplicate the group, flatten it, make your slice off that and hide the duped layer. Or just make the slice manually. It’s up to you.

    Thanks
I have found since that if I select the background layer of the button I can use layer slice.
