Slaving the 100B to another source
Posted by Nelson May on July 12, 2006 at 1:42 pmThe instruction book is very vague on this one, but does anyone know how to slave the 100B to another camera so I can have the same timecode? So far I see it has to be done with the DV or the firewire input. Again, the instructions are vague and I am having trouble getting it to see a Panasonic gs-120’s timecode.

July 14, 2006 at 1:36 pmThe 100s will not “slave” to another camera in the traditional sense. To get identical timecode on each (100,a,b) camera, insure you’ve got a hand remote that controls both, put them side by side, set TC to “Free Run”, and set to the TC you want. Basically the remote control is controlling both cameras so that they have identical timecode.
There may be some configuring in the camera menu involved to get the remote control to direct both cameras, but this is the only way to get identical TC on both.
Or so I think.

July 14, 2006 at 1:45 pmThanks,
That sounds logical to me. You would think for the money, they would make this “fool Proof”

July 14, 2006 at 1:53 pmFor the money, they can’t make it fool proof. By any traditional standard of cost in television production, the DVX is an utter bargain. You’ll need to spend at least 3 times what the DVX cost in order to “slave” cameras together for TC purposes.

July 14, 2006 at 2:16 pmI was able to use the remote of my Panasonic GS 120 and it started the 120 and the 100B in the record mode. Just to cover all my bases: starting with fresh tapes, do you thing they will start to record at the same time (exact TC), or would this be a feature of “2” 100Bs? I don’t have time to capture the footage and look at in since I have to head out for a shoot. Should I still use sticks -clap board as a backup? I will have to look in the manual for the timecode “freerun” function.

July 14, 2006 at 2:22 pmYou should do the process I outlined just before you begin shooting, and you must be in the “free-run” mode, otherwise you will be out of sync as the cameras stop recording at different times. Failing that, the clap-board method may be of assistance.
Good Luck,

July 14, 2006 at 2:34 pmThanks AGAIN,
It looks like I can’t set Free Run on my GS-120, so I am going to have to use the sticks.
